Summary

We started this chapter with a look at how you can learn about the Excel object model. You recorded a simple macro and then learned how to translate the macro to Visual Basic 2005 code in VSTO. You also enhanced this functionality by programmatically adding a button to the toolbar. We next looked at the various host items and host controls available in Excel and explained how to add these controls to worksheets through Excel's native functionality and through VSTO's functionality of dragging controls from the Toolbox to the worksheet.

We then looked at how to bind data to host controls such as list objects and named ranges, and how to cache the data in the document. Finally, we looked at the events available on the host items and host controls and illustrated the use of many of these events through code examples.
