How to Read This Book

We have written the chapters to be read in order. Each chapter builds upon concepts of the previous chapters. The complexity of the concepts also grows with each chapter.

In the beginning, we show you how to do the basics, like creating a project and running it. If you are new to VSTO or Visual Basic 2005, we recommend that you start at the beginning and work your way through the book. If you are familiar with Office and .NET programming, you may want to skip directly to the chapters that interest you.

We have also included advanced samples in the appendixes for your use when you feel comfortable with VSTO programming. Appendix A shows you how to create XML code snippets. These snippets allow you to insert your code into your solutions to make it easier and faster to create great applications. Appendix B shows you one way to create toolbars for Outlook Inspectors.
