Understanding the Properties Window

The Properties window allows you to review and set properties for the currently selected Access class or module. The name of the selected object is displayed in the Object box located just below the Properties window title bar. Properties of the object can be viewed alphabetically or by category by clicking on the appropriate tab. The Properties window displays the current settings for the selected object. Figure 2-3 displays the properties of the ContactName text box located in the Customers form. In order to access these properties, highlight Form_Customers in the Project Explorer window. Next, click the View Object button as shown in Figure 2-3. This will open the selected form in Design view. Now, return to the Code window. The Properties window will be filled with the properties for the Customers form. To view the properties of the ContactName text box as shown in Figure 2-3, select ContactName from the dropdown list located below the Properties window title bar.

Alphabetic tab — Alphabetically lists all properties for the selected object. You can change the property setting by selecting the property name, then typing or selecting the new setting. Categorized tab — Lists all properties for the selected object by category. You can collapse the list so that you see only the category names or you can expand a category to see the properties. The plus (+) icon to the left of the category name indicates that the category list can be expanded. The minus (-) indicates that the category is currently expanded.

The Properties window can be accessed in one of the following three ways:

From the View menu by selecting Properties Window

From the keyboard by pressing F4 From the toolbar by clicking the Properties Window button located to the right of the Project Explorer button (see Figure 2-2)
